Do You Need a Permit for a Garage Door in Ada County?

By Boise Garage Door Guys. Reviewed by the local garage door techs we refer. Updated November 2026.

In Boise, Meridian, Eagle and unincorporated Ada County, replacing a garage door in the same opening with a door of the same size generally does not require a building permit. Changing the size of the opening, modifying the header, adding a door where there was a wall, or converting a garage to living space does. The techs we refer know which case you have and pull the permit when one is needed.

Like for like replacement

Taking out an old door and putting a new one in the same opening, with the same rough size, is maintenance in the eyes of every building department in the Valley. No permit, no inspection. This covers almost every residential door replacement, including upgrading from a non insulated door to an insulated one.

When a permit is needed

Widening or raising the opening to fit a bigger door or an RV door means a new header, and a new header is structural work that needs a permit and an inspection. Adding a garage door to a shop or a wall that did not have one, or closing an opening to turn a garage into a room, needs one too. Electrical work for a new opener circuit may need a separate electrical permit.

Boise, Meridian and Eagle differ a little

The City of Boise, the City of Meridian and the City of Eagle each have their own building department and their own online portal. Ada County handles unincorporated areas. The rules above hold across all four, but the forms and fees differ. The techs we refer deal with each office regularly.

HOAs are the other approval

Many subdivisions in Meridian, Eagle and south Boise have design rules for door style, color and windows. That is not a government permit, but the HOA can make you change a door that does not match. Check the covenants before ordering, and the tech can help with the common ones.

Commercial doors are different

Commercial door replacements on a business building often need a permit regardless of size, and fire rated doors always do. Ask the tech and the building department before ordering.

If you are past the easy answers, the techs we refer handle garage door installation in Boise the same day in most cases. For the background on this topic, see the City of Boise Planning and Development Services department.

Frequently asked questions

Does replacing my opener need a permit?

No. If a new electrical circuit has to be run for it, the electrician may need an electrical permit.

How long does a permit take in Boise?

Simple residential permits are often issued in a few days through the online portal. Header changes may take longer if plans are required.

Who pulls the permit?

The contractor, in almost every case. The techs we refer handle it when the job needs one.

What happens if I skip a permit I needed?

Problems at resale, when an inspector or appraiser notices, and possible fines. Not worth it on a header change.

Does Canyon County have the same rules?

Nampa and Caldwell have their own building departments with similar rules. Like for like replacement generally needs nothing.

Does a bigger door need a permit?

Yes, if the opening has to be widened or raised. Same size door, no.
